YouTube here I come

Quite some time ago I got the idea into my tiny little brain that I would sit down and talk to the world via YouTube. I bought some fancy 4k webcam, set up a YouTube channel, sat back and did bugger all.

You see, sitting and talking to a camera is not that easy. Then you need to factor in “editing” the video. While I am very happy editing still photographs (been doing that for years and I got quite good at it) I haven’t got the first clue how to edit video. I also have at some time during the editing process got to look at myself and hear my voice, neither of which I like doing because I’m butt ugly and I hate the sound of my voice!

Finally, top all that off with trying to work out what I’m going to say and it never really got going.

But that changed this week. It started with picking up a DJI Mic Mini transmitter and receiver microphone set from Amazon, hooking them up to my new Pixel 10 phone and actually put my backside into gear and hit that record button.

The result was a 2 minute and 18 second video that is possibly the most cringe worthy piece of crap in the entire history and future of YouTube. After a few days the video has had just 24 views and I totally don’t care. In fact such a low view rate is probably a good thing. However, it was the spark that I needed to get myself going.

Here’s a bit of a little story for you that I think is quite relevant. Many years ago I got up early one morning and went into Nottingham with a camera and took random photographs. Back home I looked at them. They were rubbish but it was a starting point, ground zero if you like. The following week I went out again and took more photographs, went home and looked at them and again they were still rubbish. But not quite as rubbish as before. After repeating this process many times I eventually became a BLOODY GOOD photographer (still am!). I was that good I could have turned pro.

I’m now applying the same approach to video blogging.

Just to add a foot note, the day after I recorded “episode 1” I sat and recorded a “YouTube Short” talking about the recent Manchester terrorist attack on the synagogue and as with the photography, it was just as rubbish as the first video but maybe just a tiny bit better this time, and to my absolute amazement, in a little over 24 hours it has received 350 views and 8 likes. I’m a YouTube sensation!!!!!

Finally, as with all things I dive headlong into, this hasn’t stopped at just picking up the DJI Mic Mini microphones, oh no!! I now have a DJI Action 5 Pro camera and hand grip winging it’s way across the country to my house for delivery before 10pm.
